Another Defeat

St. Mary Bourne Cricket Clubs batting performances at the moment are a little bit like the weather, dismal with no real sign of brightening up. And this week was no different, the visitors to The Recreation Ground on this occasion Michelmersh & Timsbury, who promptly won the toss and on an overcast afternoon wasted no time in inserting the Home team in to bat.

A decision that proved masterful as the fragile SMB top order crumbled to 26-6. As always the Bourne batsmen the main contributors to their downfall. Steve Wood (2) was run out by half of pitch length as he attempted a second run, Martin Clay (13) was caught pulling outside leg as the ball looped up off the back of the bat to first slip. Only Rob King (56*) remained, standing firm aided for a long while by Phil Fish (7) as Bourne finally succumbed for 86 all out in the 39th Over.

A tight opening spell from Martin Clay kept the batsmen honest but couldn’t find the breakthrough, before an athletic piece of catching from Square leg specialist Phil Fish saw off one of the openers. Steve Wood bowled with craft and guile and was unlucky not to pick up the other opener, dropped by Crumpy in the deep. Keen to redeem himself Nick Crump on to bowl banged in his first ball half way down the wicket, the unfortunate batsman finding skipper Paul Bulpitt on the boundary.

All over pretty quickly as Michelmersh & Timbsury reached SMB’s total for the loss of just 2 wickets. Bourne look onwards to Penton this weekend in the hope of a batting revival!
